Well, I had a pretty good night’s sleep this last night. It was quite nice. After breakfast I looked over what I wanted to say for my presentation and then headed to La Casita early so that I could use the Internet there for a bit before classes started. It got to answer my emails and got on facebook a bit. In composition class we reviewed the present tense before we took our first exam. I didn’t think it was that hard of an exam, so I’m hoping I did well.
Then in Conversation class we had our “presentations” We actually went outside for class, which was nice. I went first to get it out of the way, and then after we all went, the professor said that she’d write out some things we could improve on and give that to us tomorrow. and it didn’t seem like much of a big deal; It seems like we get credit for putting forth the effort. Very nice, takes off the stress.
After classes, I headed up to the mall and had some lunch then walked back to La Casita to use their Internet for an hour before we headed to the Museo de Oro (Gold Museum). It’s the 3 largest collection of pre-Columbian gold in the Americas after Bogata and Limon.
It wasn’t a long bus ride since it’s in San Jose. It was right behind the Teatro Nacional where we’re going next Tuesday. The place was under heavey security. We had to walk through a metal detector before going in and couldn’t even take a purse. We had to wait in a airport long line to get in, cause everyone has to empty their pockets, etc. Also in there were mini-museums about money and art. It wasn’t a super impressive museum. A lot the signs with information on them repeated themselves over and over again. And a lot of the stuff the signs said was stuff I learned in general western civ class. And after a while all the gold figurines and sculptures and such started to look the same. The metallurgy was quite amazing though; the figurines were often very tiny and detailed.
After we got back to La Casita about 5pm. I went to a café that’s the next building over. I had heard from other students that it was a great place for wifi and that they had awesome milkshakes. So, naturally I went and tested both. lol The Internet worked great for half-an-hour and then cut off on me…I’m starting to wonder if there is some compatibility issue with my Mac because sometimes when the Internet dies for me it still works for other people…but then again other times it dies on all of us.
By about 6pm I realized I was sitting in the smoking section…oops, so now my jacket smells like cigarettes…yuck! (Most of the time here you’re allowed to smoke outside, but with the windows open all the time you usually get a whiff every now and then, but in the café I started off thinking it was just the wind blowing some inside but then 3 people lit up right next too me and then I saw the sign that said “fumando”
Ashley hasn’t shown up yet, but Gabi and I had dinner. It was actually good. She called it Chinese rice. Currently she keeps calling me into the living room asking me to translate the English CNN and Larry King Live both which are reporting on Michael Jackson. lol I can’t translate it well and quickly. Oh well, she’s gotten the gist of it. Everywhere I turn here, I hear or see something about Michael Jackson. They must be really obsessed with him here, too.
Speaking of news, this morning a girl from my comp class and I were looking at the Yahoo news and noticed SC was on the front page! (She goes to school at Winthrop, but is from Charleston) We looked over the story about the Gaffney serial killer, but we didn’t have enough time to get the whole story before class started. Anyone have a summary of what happened?
This coming weekend is going to be quite nice. We don’t have classes Friday, so then I hope to go to the Mercado Central that most people are raving about and then on Saturday I plan to go on a canopy tour with the Polchow’s. Should be a fun weekend! Gonna read a while now since I don’t have any homework. G’night!
:-) Rek
