Well, Ashley missed out on it! The “che” of Gabi came over lastnight while she was at the movie theatre! lol We had just sat down for a dinner of hot dogs when he showed up. He came bearing candy for Maripas and ice cream sandwiches for everyone. He also brought a movie that he and Gabi watched part of, but ended up talking and laughing instead. lol Then after about an hour of that Gabi and he left for somewhere. Not sure when Ashley and Gabi got back, I apparently fell asleep while listening to an old sermon.
This morning I got to sleep in til 8am…ahhhh it felt so good. It’s 9am now and they’re listening to the radio, sweeping, cleaning dishes from lastnight, and singing with it and talking over it. Speaking of the dishes, I went in there to get water before they all got up and there was a glass of orange juice left out and it had tons of dead ants in it. And then there was a bowl with remnants of something in it that was covered in ants as well…Such a mess, at least I’m not the one cleaning!
This morning it’s really windy outside along with some blue sky, which is so pretty. Don’t get to see it too much here. Not sure what I’m going to do with my day. I need to work on my presentation a bit, but that won’t take too much time. I’m not sure what will be open in town since it’s Sunday. I guess I might go to my café if they’re open. Oh and I need to drop off Mrs. Polchow’s towels. hmm…I might stop by the panderia that’s down the street. It smells SO good in the mornings when they’re baking. Well, other than than I guess it’ll be a relaxing day of reading. Haven’t had one of those in a while. :-)
Well! The plans for the day changed over breakfast! Gabi invited us to go to the market with her. She wanted to go to the one in Zapote, which is quite a ways from here. We walked to San Pedro, took the bus for 3 stops and then walked the rest of the way to Zapote. Remember the “pretty” weather I mentioned earlier? It is hot here today because the sun is out. Although it’s a blessing that it’s not like Carolina hot though!
Ashley and I really wished we had brought our cameras! This was a market! Not that thing downtown. It was fun. We got to taste some strange fruits. I really liked one of them. It looked like a sea urchin, but was this deep red color. I think she called it a mamone You open it up and inside is this oval thing that looks like some sort of really large frog egg or something like that slimy and a translucent white color., but it tasted almost like the grapes at the old farm. Very good. Then next thing we tried looked kinda like crab apples and they tasted sorta like apples, but were the size of cherry tomatoes. Then there was this other thing that I’m not even sure how to describe it. It was green—neither Ashley nor I liked it..
Since we were so hot, Ashley and I asked a guy how much his cokes were…He told us 800 colones, but hesitated a bit so you could tell he was upcharging since we were gringas. He was going to charge us $1.50 for a coke. So then we told Maripas to ask the price at the next person we saw selling coke, but we never saw another one. But we took a taxi home since we had accumulated a lot of fruits and veggies…all four of us were carrying bags full. The taxi ride took 15 minutes to get back to the house. And it was hot in there! No a/c and then the only window that would roll down was the driver’s.
Well, I think Ashley and I are going to drop off the towels sometime today, and I guess I’ll see if the café is open or not. A milkshake sounds really good right about now being as I’m so hot and sweaty! lol
Well, we ended up eating some lunch before going out. A "birthday lunch" It was spaghetti noodles, with hot dog bits and carrots mixed in. But! We actually had soda! They bought this huge bottle of Coke (2.5 liters) Gabi did a toast for me. hahaha After we finished eating there began a huge debate over what a pineapple plant looked like. Gabi seriously believed they grew on a miniture tree! hahaha Anyways, the dispute ended when she called her mom and put her on speaker phone and asked her what they looked like. I just copied a picture from the Internet to show her lol
So Ashley and I finally went out about 4:30 and took our towels to Mrs. Polchow and visited a bit and then I went down the street to the really popular ice cream chain store here known as POPS. They're milkshake was okay, but 300 colones more expensive...Cafe Kracovia is much better. But to my dismay Kracovia is closed Sundays!!! :-(
Classes again tomorrow. Exam Tuesday. Presentation Wednesday. Oh, and Tuesday we're visiting the Teatro Nacional, just looking at the architecture from what I understand, not actually watching something...oh well.
:-) Rek
