July 30th

Well, I woke up about 5am as usual, but layed in bed for a bit longer. Got up, got ready, packed the last minute items, tidied up my room, and had breakfast. A wimpy breakfast. lol Gabi told me the night before that she was going to serve me a "strong breakfast" but all I ended up getting was 2 slices of bread, a slice of deli ham, and a slice of cheese. Not too much protien in that meal! After breakfast, I got a picture of my family and then headed out the door. I carried all my stuff up the hill and to the bus stop. I took the bus with my luggage and then got off at the school stop and then walked up another hill to get to Shannon's. Much cheaper than a taxi, and it wasn't that bad in my opinion. I had seen several people do it before, but everyone seemed to think I was crazy for doing that...lol oh well.

Got there and still had about 30 minutes to kill before the other two gals showed up. So I talked with Shannon and played catch with Benjamin. Then our shuttle came and took us to the airport, and it turns out that they didn't close the bridge...oh well! So we got to the airport real early and got through all the lines fairly quickly. Once again the little ones got us to the front of one of the lines. Unfortunately that doesn't happen in the States. lol After we got to the gates I went and found Cinnabon and had a second breakfast...very tasty. Our flight didn't leave until 12:35, so I passed time with some of the other MLSA girls that were waiting for later flights as well.

When we were talking a guy came up to us and asked if we would fill out a survey and we said sure. He was from the Costa Rica tourism department of the gov't and he started asking questions. It was a very interesting interview, all 3 of us had been to different places and done different things. And on top of that he had interesting English. He spoke it fairly well and learned it from watching American TV, but he said some crazy stuff. For example he told us "Is okay if I sit my butt down right here?" instead of "Can I sit here?" lol I'm sure I sound just as strange in Spanish, but a lot of his phrases were not what you'd say in polite company. lol

After being surveyed I went and got some lunch at the Burger King in the airport. It was 3 dollars cheaper if I got a cheeseburger than if I got a hamburger...so I got a cheeseburger. Shortly after that I boarded the plane and we took off. So long Costa Rica!

We landed in Houston and realized that instead of 3 hours for immigration and customs we only had 2 hours. Messed up by the time zones. In the words of Jennifer, "Time travel makes me crazy." We got through immigration in about 30 minutes even with the HUGE line. And my 5-year-old boyfriend carried (well dragged) my heavy bookbag most of the way through the line which was awesome. lol After that we went and got our luggage and took it too customs, and thankfully our bags didn't have to be searched so that was really quick. (My two seashells and piece of coral were not discovered!) Then we took the tram to terminal B and found gate 84 like our ticket said, but then we learned that ours was gate 73...so we had to almost run all the back over there. We showed up a bit after 7pm (boarding started supposedly at 6:45). We got there and thankfully the plane had just landed so we had a 10-15 minute delay.

So we saw a food stand and decided it was a good time to eat some dinner, but the lady was closed/closing. So one of the girls travelling with us went up to the lady and asked what she was going to do with that leftover pizza and hot dog. And she sold them to us! And then she gave us 4 leftover pretzels...Mmm! Shortly thereafter we boarded the plane and settled in for another flight. I learned the secret of how to lift of the aisle arm rests and was able to sit much more comfortablely that way.

We landed and I walked out of the gate areas and hugged my parents before headed to baggage claim. My bag was one of the first ones off and when I picked it up I learned that it was oozing...my shampoo had leaked. Said goodbye to the travelling companions, and headed to the car. Then my parents realized that they had lost their parking ticket. So the search for that began and then my mom found it in her purse...lol My daddy drove back to Greenville and I finally got in bed about 2am.

The shampoo mess was cleaned up the next day, laundry all completed, and most everything has found a place. It's nice to finally be at home! And here lies the end of my Costa Rican tale! Congrats to all who made it all the way through! :-P

July 29th – Last Day

Well, I’m pretty much all packed. I only have to stuff a few more things in my bags before departing tomorrow. The plan originally was that the shuttle to the airport was going to pick us up at 10 am and then our flight was at 12:35pm. But I learned this morning from Gabi that the bridge that goes to the airport closes at 9am, so I called Shannon and she said she’d check into it. I thought that there might be some other path to the airport, but it’s looking like that bridge is the only way to the airport…should’ve known, knowing these crazy streets. lol SO! Shannon came by our ceremony thing this morning and told me that the shuttle is now getting us at 8am. So I’m gonna be having an even longer day. In Houston 3 hours was given in between flights so we can get through customs and then finally arriving back in Columbia at 11pm. Well…I guess it’ll feel like 9pm to me…that’ll be better…lol

Well, this morning I had some more of the amazing fresh bread and then a bowl of watermelon along with a slice of deli ham and a slice of cheese. I headed up to the University early so that I could use the Internet to post my Poas blog and pictures and do other Internet type things. lol At 11pm was the ceremony. They called all of our names and we went up and got certificates. Then after that we all went to the student cafeteria to have lunch, but first we had a 15-20 minute dance demonstration…I’m not sure what to call it…it was some sort of dance I’ve never seen before. Modern? Interpretive? It mostly looked like the dancers were crawling, rolling, and tangling with each other rather than dancing. Oh well, lunch was soon to follow. For lunch we had rice, some beef, some salad, and a dessert. I didn’t like the dressing they had mixed into the salad (it was lime based). And the dessert to my disappointment was coconut something with pieces of fruit in it…no chocolate :-( It looked pretty though.

Afterwards I got pictures with some of the friends I made here and then headed to Kracovia to use the Internet. Shortly after I had finished my milkshake the Internet crashed. So I decided to go up to the mall and figure out something to do. Cindy, the gal that said she wanted to go see HBP today possibly, never came and found me and the 2 times I asked her she said she didn’t know if she was going. Well, I got to the mall at 2:20, there was practically no line, so I got a ticket for the 2:30 showing. Since it was Wednesday, I got in for $1.75 and I didn’t get any popcorn, so it was a really cheap afternoon! lol I got out of the movie about 5pm, so I used the restroom and went to catch the bus.

I had “creepy bus” again. lol It’s one of the older buses I’m guessing, but it looks completely different from all the other Sabanilla buses. It has darkly tinted windows so when you get inside it’s dark. The parada light makes this creepy buzzing noise rather than the typical beep. Anyways, it’s a bit creepy riding this bus. I even asked others and they agree that it just feels creepy riding that particular bus. Anyways, I got off at Mas x Menos in order to buy some Chiky’s. After I did that I bought some my last Dos Pinos ice cream cone. Ice cream is well loved here and it’s very cheap. (Well, it’s cheap if you buy it in a cone; they tack on another 2 dollars if you ask for a cup. So I just use the cone as a cup! hahaha)

After that I walked home, and arrived just in time to see Ashley off. Her boyfriend arrived this afternoon and she’s spending the night at the hotel with him. Met her boyfriend, said goodbye and then the taxi arrived. About 30 minutes later Gabi showed up and found Ashley’s gift and note. (Some very good smelling body wash and lotion) Soon there after dinner was serving…more chicken hamburgers… Not a fan :-P Had another casi conversation and then Gabi headed out for a date, or something like that. Well, I’m gonna turn in for the night soon. Gotta be up at about 6am and it’s going to be a long day. Buena Noche!
