July 10th

Well, I finally got to sleep in! (Sorta) I was still awoken at 5am, but I fell back asleep about 6:30 and didn't get up until 8am. Oh so nice. :-) I got up and Gabi told me she was headed to the gym and that dinner was on the stove. So I went and checked it out. Scrambled eggs and gallo pinto (without cilantro! Yes!) It was very good in my opinion. Something that would last 'til noon.

Then Ashley and I got all set up for walking through the not so great part of town. (It has a high number of robberies, pickpockets, and such particularly from gringos) So we only took what money we needed, left the cameras, passports, etc. at home. Our host mom told us that we needed to get off on the last stop of the Sabanilla bus. When we got to our bus stop we asked a lady there which stop was the last one. She told us, but we didn't quite understand it, but she told us when to get off the bus...which was kinda odd since there were still a lot of people on the bus...and she told us where to go. Ashley wanted to go the right and I to the left. Since I assumed she understood what the lady said as directions I went to the right. We ended up near some hospital and then looked a bit lost obviously because a taxi driver got out and asked what we were looking for. We told him and he tried to sell us a taxi ride by telling us it was really far, but when Ashley asked how far by walking he said 10 minutes...lol Anyways, he told us where we needed to go and we retraced our path and began going the direction I originally wanted to take. (I had studied the downtown map this morning and was pretty sure of the general location of the market between Calles 6&8 and Ave central & 1) We started down Avenida 1 and walked for a good while, and then I noticed a pharmacy up ahead and decided to stop there and lucky me! They had one last packet of ear plugs! They were on the expensive side, but they were the only ones I have found in the past few days of searching and I'll use them for sure.

After that we kept continuing down the road and started wondering if we were getting close. We passed some beautiful colonial buildings everynow and then, kinda wished I had my camera. The old telegraph building, old post office, etc. Finally we came upon a place that had a sign "MERCADO CENTRAL" over the door. It looked like a terribly worn down warehouse. We walked in and it was very small in my opinion and totally unorganized. (I'm comparing it to the one I saw in Mexico, wherever that was?) You could barely walk, most of the time you were running into whatever was being sold. You'd be walking down  an "aisle" and then all of a sudden it'd become a store and then you'd go through that store and end up in another store. Very confusing. Ashley and I didn't spend much time in there. Nothing took either of our fancies. But! I did buy a medium sized over the shoulder type bag. I'll have to get a picture of it. It's in my greens and blues.

Then we stopped at an ice cream place that was right outside and Ashley had this crazy thing called a ticolo. It was red slushie, vanilla ice cream, pineapple on the bottom, a cookie stick, and some syrups on top. It looked like a kids dream dessert lol I just had some chocolate ice cream. Then we went looking at a few of the stores near the market. We came upon one that was selling 3 pairs of jeans for the price of one. Ashley and I thought we'd split it, but neither of us fit in them. Since the people are so skinny here, Ashley was the largest size and I was like 2 below that. We could get them on, but it didn't flatter our body types at all lol So we didn't get any. I did find a very pretty beach towel that was $1.50. Then we went and had lunch at the same place we had ice cream. When we had paid we realized that they had some really good looking rotisserie chicken. I got the rotisserie chicken and Ashley got a hamburger instead. I'm not sure what cut of meat I had...It was white meat, but had the chicken wing attached to it...anyways it was really good!

Then we started walking back to where we got off the bus, but we really didn't know where the bus stop for the bus headed to Sabanilla was. We asked a police guy, but he didn't know...that was odd. And then we asked a lady in one of hte parks, she didn't know, but she went with us to ask other people and they told us where to go. We made a big circle. lol

Ashley got off the bus at the University because she had some stuff she had to do for her online class and I went on home to work on my presentation a bit in the quiet house. Ashley didn't have her keys so I waited until she got back before I headed out for the Cafe Kracovia. My favourite spot for Internet and milkshakes. :-) Not much else to say. Zipline tomorrow! :-D

:-) Rek
