July 6th

Well, today wasn’t super eventfully compared to the weekend, but it was another day of Costa Rican life. In my composition class we practiced descriptions with ser and estar. So for the first paragraph she had us walk around outside and describe something, then we had to describe a picture of a person, and then we had to close our eyes and describe what we heard.

In my conversation class we talked about the excursions we had this past weekend and what we did with a focus on using the preterit correctly. Then we were told that the presentations that we thought had to be a minute or so had to be at least 5 minutes!!! That had us in a tizzy. Mine is about 4 minute and 15 seconds. I don’t have time to think of more to say and get super familiar with it, so it’ll have to do. I don’t think she’ll be keeping time though; at least I hope not.

After lunch today I went off on my own to find a place to print my paper. I found an Internet Café in the mall and they print stuff there. The guy there also kindly let me use his stapler too. After that I went to the ATM and got money for this weekend (canopy tour via zip line!), lunches, and whatever else might come up. Then I went to Pague Menos. It’s a cheap clothing store..mm…kinda like a Ross or Marshals. Ashley and I had been there before cause she got an. umbrella from them, and I was thinking about getting an umbrella with a button and is a bit larger. So far I’ve been lucky, but not sure when it’ll run out and I get soaked. But while there I found on of the clearance racks and got another t-shirt for 895 colones (about $1.50). It’s green of course lol I'll wear it instead of some of my favourite shirts incase the stains happen again.

I had a great Internet connection for about an hour and a half and then it just died on me :-( But I’m glad I got to upload everything and use wordreference.com for as long as I did. I finished writing the presentation about 4:45pm so I decided to head on home. Got here about 5pm and thought that I had the house to myself again because it was SO quiet. Then I quickly learned why it was so quiet. The electricity was out! So Maripas and Gabriel couldn’t have the TV and music blaring!

I studied for as long as I could by the setting sunlight, but after an hour I needed a light. I asked for a flashlight using the word I was taught, but Gabriel had no idea what I was talking about, but then he brought me a tiny gas lantern, but it didn’t produce enough light to read. Then Maripas handed me the flashlight she was using, but it was dying. And then eventually the found a candle. The candle worked wonderfully! lol I think this is the first time I’ve read and studied by candlelight! It was nice, but I could have used one more candle.

About 7:15 Gabi got home and made dinner. Beans, rice, and some sausage thing (there was also guacamole—tasted it again and still don’t like it) We ate dinner by that single candle and had a fun conversation. Right after dinner, I went to the bathroom to brush my teeth and the light came on! yay!

When I got home today, in my room on the curtain was a praying mantis. I tried to get it out the window, but it did not work. It went under my bed! And without power I couldn't see anything. (Update: I found it this morning July 7th and got it out the window)

Now I’m going to rehearse a bit in my room before heading on to bed....possibly reading a little since I haven’t done that in a few nights. Tomorrow we’re going to the Museo de Oro (Gold Museum). Goodnight!

:-) Rek
