Setting Up

As some of you may know, the plan was originally to go to Mexico for the WHOLE summer, but due to drug wars, violence, kidnapping, and various relatives telling my parents to not let me go to Mexico, the choice was made to go to Costa Rica.

It was kind of a spur of the moment decision. One day I was telling the International Studies department at Upstate that I was going to Mexico and the next I was turning in an application to the Universidad de Costa Rica.

I'm not going alone though. A few other students and a professor from Upstate will be there, in addition to all the other study abroad students coming from other places. I'm taking 6 credit hours: Spanish Conversation I and Spanish Composition I. I'll be staying with a host family for the month and getting to see lots of cool things while I'm down there. Hopefully I'll come back speaking the language or at least being able to think in Spanish.

Well, I'm not leaving until June 28th, but figured I'd start setting up the blog while I was thinking of it.

:-) Rek

  1. That's so sad... I can tell you from a reliable source (since I live here) that not everything you hear on the news is the truth, and I've personally never known ANYONE who has been kidnapped, involved in a shooting, violented by drug lords and/or suffering from random violence. You just have to be smart and take care of yourself (just like you would do on the States). It's even sadder Rebecca, because your mom is mexican and should know better. It's just like saying that traveling to the US is dangerous because of all the terrorism. I'm not saying that there are no risks in coming to Mexico, but they're just the same of going anywhere in south or central America (and you know there are much more dangerous places there than here in Mexico). It really saddens me to realize that people can be swayed by such prejudice. You know we will always have our home open to you and your family, here in beautiful Querétaro. Hugs Rebecca, I hope you're really enjoying Costa Rica and taking in the full range of beautiful things it has to offer.
